Sublimation printing uses high-speed, high-quality inkjet printers to print images on paper, eliminating the hassle of plate making. It can replace screen printing. The patterns can be produced by a computer or scanned by scanning equipment, which is convenient, accurate, and easy to adjust. It is precisely because of its excellent performance that the sublimation paper must meet various requirements, such as high-temperature resistance, dimensional stability, and ink absorption, etc., especially the ink absorption performance has a great influence on the sublimation paper. The ink absorption of the base paper is too strong and fast, which will cause color bleeding, while the ink absorption is too weak and slow, which will lead to the occurrence of ink pile-up. The occurrence of these two phenomena will affect the sublimation paper and transfer performance. Therefore, it is necessary to explore the factors affecting the ink absorption of sublimation paper.

1. The influence of paper structure on the ink absorption performance of sublimation paper
The ink absorbency of paper refers to the ability of the paper surface to receive the transferred ink at the moment of imprinting. It is the ability of the paper surface to be wetted by the printing ink, the ability of the paper surface to absorb certain ink components, and the ability of the paper surface to fix and retain a uniform ink film. Paper is a porous material, and there are a lot of small gaps or pores inside the paper. If there is a mismatch between the pore structure of the paper and the ink characteristics, it will cause a series of printing failures.

When the pores between the paper fibers are very small, the capillary action of the fibers is destroyed, and the ink absorption performance will be poor. When the pores are large, the ink absorption is too strong, if the ink viscosity is low and the printing pressure is high, it will cause the ink to penetrate to the back of the paper so that the imprint can not show the proper color saturation on the paper surface, which affects the quality of the printed matter.

In addition to the basic requirements of general coated paper, the base paper of sublimation paper has certain requirements on tightness and air permeability. If the base paper is too tight and has greater air permeability, the ink will penetrate to the back of the base paper during the inkjet process, causing color bleeding. If the base paper has high tightness and low air permeability, the ink will not easily enter the paper during the inkjet process and will accumulate on the surface of the paper, which will easily smudge and cause ink piles.

The ink absorption performance of the base paper is also closely related to the void ratio, filling amount, sizing amount, etc. The void ratio is the fundamental factor affecting ink absorption performance. Ink particles enter the paper through these voids, and the size of the void ratio directly affects the ink absorption speed and capacity. The amount of filling will affect the void ratio, which in turn affects the ink absorption performance. Different types of fillers have different affinity for the ink, which will also affect the ink absorption performance. Whether it is sizing in the pulp or sizing outside the pulp, it will affect the hydrophilicity of the paper, which in turn affects the ink absorption performance.
