UV ink is widely used in UV digital printers, thanks to its excellent curing properties and vibrant color effects, making it the preferred choice in many industrial fields. However, to ensure that UV ink meets the required standards, a series of tests must be conducted to evaluate its performance. Below is a detailed step-by-step guide on how to test UV ink, helping users guarantee the stability and reliability of the ink.

 

1. Visual Inspection: The First Quality Check

The visual inspection is the first step in ensuring UV ink quality. This includes the following:

  • Color: Ensure the ink color meets the required specifications, and check for uniformity without noticeable color variations.
  • Transparency: Observe the ink’s transparency for any signs of cloudiness, sediment, or impurities.
  • Flowability: Check whether the ink flows smoothly from the container without issues, which helps prevent blockages in the printer's head.

 

2. Viscosity Test: Maintaining the Right Flow

Viscosity is a key factor in the ink's performance. If the viscosity is too high, it can cause nozzle blockages or slow printing speed; if it is too low, it can affect adhesion and printing accuracy. Viscosity is typically measured using a viscometer at specific temperatures and shear rates, and the results should be compared with the manufacturer's recommended range.

 

3. Curing Performance Tests: Ensuring Proper Drying and Adhesion

The curing performance of UV ink directly impacts its printing results. Key tests for curing performance include:

  • Drying Time: Apply the ink to a test surface under standard conditions (such as specific temperature, humidity, and light intensity) and record the time required for the ink to transition from liquid to solid. The drying time should meet production requirements to ensure efficient processing.
  • Pencil Hardness Test: Use a pencil hardness tester to assess the hardness of the cured ink layer. The ink should achieve a minimum hardness level (e.g., 3H  4H) to ensure it is fully cured and resistant to abrasion and scratching.
  • Adhesion Test: Common adhesion tests include the crosshatch and 3M adhesion tests. The crosshatch test involves scoring the inked surface with a specified number of squares (e.g., 100 small squares), then applying and quickly removing the tape to assess the adhesion of the ink layer. The results are typically rated from Grade 0 (no loss) to Grade 5 (severe delamination).

 

 

4. Lightfastness Test: Evaluating Color Stability Under LongTerm Exposure

The lightfastness of UV ink depends on the pigment’s inherent resistance to light. To test this, tools like a QUV weathering tester and XRite colorimeter can be used to evaluate the color stability of the ink under prolonged exposure to UV light.

 

5. Chemical Properties Test: Ensuring Safety and Environmental Compliance

UV ink may come into contact with various chemicals during its use, so testing its chemical properties is crucial:

  • Heavy Metal Content: The ink should comply with regulations regarding heavy metals like lead, cadmium, mercury, and hexavalent chromium. For example, the lead content should typically be less than 1000 ppm, and cadmium should be below 100 ppm to ensure environmental safety.
  • Other Harmful Substance Testing: Additional tests may include checks for harmful substances such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs), as well as other toxic chemicals depending on the specific application and regulatory requirements.

 

6. Stability Tests: Ensuring Performance Under Extreme Conditions

The stability of UV ink plays a vital role in its performance under various environmental conditions:

  • High-Temperature Test: Place the UV ink in a high-temperature environment (e.g., 55°C to 70°C) for a week, then allow it to return to room temperature (20 to 25°C) for 24 hours before conducting continuous printing tests for at least one hour. The ink should not exhibit clogging or color changes during continuous printing.
  • Low-Temperature Test: Similarly, place the UV ink in a low-temperature environment (e.g., 37°C to 46°C) for a week, followed by the same procedure of returning it to room temperature and conducting printing tests for at least an hour. The ink should maintain stable performance without color fading or clogging.

 

7. Additional Tests: Ensuring Reliability in Specialized Applications

In certain specialized fields, UV ink needs to undergo additional tests:

  • Electrical Insulation Reliability Test: For applications that require electrical insulation properties, testing the ink’s insulation reliability is essential to ensure it will not compromise the product's electrical properties.
  • Soldering Thermal Shock Resistance Test: For industries like PCB manufacturing, the ink is tested for its ability to withstand thermal shocks during the soldering process, ensuring it maintains good performance under high-temperature conditions.
  • Abrasion Test: Using specific friction paper (such as 80g/㎡ clean white paper with a 50mm width), perform a friction test with specified passes (e.g., 40 cycles back and forth) and load conditions (20 ± 2N) to assess the ink's wear resistance and ability to withstand friction.
